The Scheme

Awards under the Lightmongers' Apprentice, Craft and Master's awards are made in line with the agreed Awarding Criteria set out by the Lightmongers' Court, the Construction Liveries Group Scheme, and the Liveries Companies Skills Council requirements. Awarding body criteria that are associated with the awards or additional citification requirements are also considered and may be presented alongside the awards.

The Lightmongers' Court is responsibile for the awards with decisions for the awards made by a Judging Panel appointed to carry out the assessment of candidate applications to the awards scheme.

In special circumstances a discretionary award may be made by the judging panel in line with the awarding criteria. This special award may be made if an individual does not meet the full requirement for the awarding criteria but it can be demonstrated that their experience and qualification are equivalent to the awarding criteria requirements.
The Lightmongers identify suitable potential candidates for the Apprentice, Craft and Master's awards. The identification of potential candidates is also done in association with appropriate industry partners and bodies.

The Awards

Apprentice Certificate

Apprentices eligible for this award would normally be following a formal Sector Skills Council craft apprenticeship framework within the footprint/scope of the Lightmongers' Livery (such as the SummitSkills apprenticeship framework for Building Services Engineering). Apprentices may also be registered on (such as the JIB apprenticeship scheme) and hold an appropriate industry recognised trade card (for example the ECS card).

Recipients of this award will have gone beyond the normal requirements required by an apprenticeship. Typically they will have excelled at their training programme and usually will have gone on to have demonstrated a high level of competence in their work environment.

Craft Certificate

Applicants for the Craft award will have completed a full craft apprenticeship and hold an industry recognised level 3 competency based qualification (for example an NVQ level 3 or equivalent) and meet the requirements to hold an appropriate industry recognised trade card (for example the ECS Gold Card).

Beneficiaries of the Craft award will have demonstrated exceptional commitment to their craft in the application of skill and available technology to have achieved recognition beyond the normal role of a crafts person. Typically they will have shown their advanced ability and will have carried out continued professional development to stay ahead in developments within the industry. They will also have demonstrated support for other work colleagues in the development and attainment of technical skills.

Typically applicants will be a member of an industry recognised professional institution (for example CIBSE, Sll, ILE or IET) and hold registration of the Engineering Council at Eng Tech or higher.

Master Certificate

Applicants for the Master award will meet the full criteria for the Craft award and in addition will have demonstrated outstanding commitment to the industry in a technical development or support role. Their achievement will be recognised by the industry and may be within their normal work environment, or in the representation of the industry in a national or international setting. Applicants will have also supported and mentored others within the industry and will have carried out continued professional development to stay ahead of developments within the industry.

Recipients of the Master award may have also been responsible for the strategic development of industry standards of a technical or educational nature in a senior position within the industry.

Typically applicants will be a member of an industry recognised professional institution (for example CIBSE, Sll, ILE or IET) and meet the requirements to be registered with the Engineering Council at either I.Eng or C.Eng.
